Giga Texas is running through the night. Tesla has not said a word

Beau Brummell · November 5, 2026
Joe Tegtmeyer says Tesla's Austin plant has moved to two 12-hour shifts through year-end and is skipping long holiday shutdowns. Tesla has…

Giga Texas is reportedly running day and night. Tesla has not confirmed a thing.

Joe Tegtmeyer, the drone pilot who has documented the Austin plant for years, said in his November 2 flyover update that the factory has moved off a single roughly ten-hour day shift. The new pattern is two 12-hour shifts, day and night, planned through at least the end of 2026. General Assembly still sits on a Monday-to-Thursday calendar. Everything else keeps working the week, with some weekend activity.

That is not a small tweak. Doubling the length of the production day, and stacking a night crew on top of it, is how a plant that already casts frames on Giga Presses and ships Model Ys, Model Y Ls, Cybertrucks and Cybercabs tries to buy more cars without waiting for the next building to finish. Tegtmeyer also said the usual multi-day shutdowns around Thanksgiving and between Christmas and New Year are not in the current plan. In prior years those pauses were visible from the parking lots. This quarter they may not be.

Tesla has not issued a statement confirming the shift change, and it has not said which lines get the extra hours. That silence matters. Cybercab output has been described, in an engineering walkthrough with Munro Live, as constrained by how fast the Robotaxi fleet can absorb new vehicles, which means the robotaxi line has not always run every day. The more plausible place for overnight volume is the Model Y and the six-seat Model Y L, where order backlogs and delivery windows into early 2027 have been a recurring complaint among buyers.

The timing fits the quarter Tesla is trying to close. Official production and delivery numbers for the third quarter show 464,391 vehicles built and 486,532 delivered. The company shipped about 22,000 more cars than it produced, which is what happens when inventory from earlier months covers a delivery beat. Model 3 and Model Y did almost all of the work: 478,237 of those deliveries. Other models, including Cybertruck, accounted for 8,295. A night shift at Austin is one way to refill the yards before December 31 without pretending the rest of the network can absorb every unit overnight.

Tegtmeyer's same November 2 pass also caught the rest of the campus moving. Cortex 2, the AI training building, is lengthening on the north end and bringing more compute online, with a third cooling plant under construction. The Boring Company launch pit east of the plant is taking forms, rebar and thrust-ring supports for a Prufrock tunnel under the Colorado River. The Advanced Technology Chip Fab, a Tesla–SpaceX research fab on the east side, continues steel and truss work aimed at first test chips sometime in mid-2027. Those projects are not the night-shift story. They are the backdrop: Austin is being asked to make more cars now while the company builds the next layer of compute, tunnels and chips around it.

None of this is an official Tesla production guide. It is an on-site observation from the most closely watched private drone account over Giga Texas, written up by Teslarati and echoed across the Tesla beat. The claim to watch is narrow and checkable: two 12-hour shifts through year-end, General Assembly still Monday to Thursday, no long holiday blackout, company confirmation still missing. If the lots keep filling and the night lights stay on, the observation will have been right. If Tesla walks it back, the correction will be just as public.
