Disney plans thousands more job cuts under D'Amaro

Some managers have been told to find savings of up to 20 per cent, in the fourth round of cuts this year.

Disney is preparing its biggest round of job cuts this year. The company plans to eliminate several thousand roles and has asked some managers to cut costs by up to 20 per cent, Bloomberg reported on Monday. CNBC confirmed the plan with its own sources.

Chief executive Josh D'Amaro aims to put part of the money back into film and TV, technology, theme parks and cruise ships, Variety reported, citing the Bloomberg report.

The fourth round under D'Amaro

D'Amaro took over as chief executive earlier this year. This would be at least the fourth round of cuts since. About 1,000 roles went in April, mostly in marketing after it was merged into one division. Several hundred went in July across Pixar, ESPN, television and the studios. A few hundred more went in September in human resources and technology.

In August, Disney offered early retirement to US executives aged 50 or over with at least 10 years' service. That month D'Amaro and finance chief Hugh Johnston told shareholders the company was "mid-stream" in cost cutting and was "evaluating a variety of levers".

Disney had about 231,000 employees at the end of fiscal 2025, Reuters reported. Under Bob Iger it cut 7,000 roles in 2023.

It is not alone in Hollywood. Netflix said last month it would cut about 6 per cent of its staff, and Skydance, the combined Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery, is expected to cut jobs as it chases $6bn in savings.

Disney reports fourth-quarter results on November 17.
